I hope you and your family will be ok and hopefully your home is high enough that it won't get flooded. Those pictures and video are really sad, so much devastation around you.

breakup guilt
by fresh prince of ohio ini recently broke up with my girlfriend of four years.. she is 40 years old, with health problems, financial problems, little family/friend support, and facing an uncertain future.
i gave her some money.. the guilt i am experiencing right now is absolutely anguishing.
she had very, very high hopes about our relationship and loved me very deeply.

You received a lot of great advise. If you do talk to her, encourage her to get professional help. It is very possible that she is stronger than you realize when she is on her own. She made it without you for 36 years so I'll bet she can pick herself up by the boot straps and continue on with her life.
You won't be doing either of you any favors going back to her. She needs someone who is in love with her and wants to truly be with her.
Don't beat yourself up. Some relationships are just not meant to be and when you become so burnt out it means it isn't healthy. You both deserve to have a healthy one with someone you are in love with.

Who is your favorite "Apostate"? Who helped you see the truth about "The Truth"?
by minimus ini would have to say that ray franz was the biggest influence for me.. when i first got on this board, a poster by the name of james, a former bethelite and organization heavy, helped me understand a lot of the inner workings in the upper echelons of the society.. .
and of course, farkel's common sense approach was (usually) helpful..

For me the book Diane Wilson wrote was the first book I read and it opened my eyes to the treatment of women, then I read one of David Reeds books . I still felt I was missing something so I went on Amazon and everyone was talking about Ray Franz so I bought that and read it and my husband willing read it. We then read a number of other books and then we found all of the wonderful websites such as Freeminds, JWfacts, JWnet, and a few others. I am very thankful that there is a wealth of knowledge out there.

Missy, I forgot to tell you something that may be of interest to you. I was on prescription antidepressants for over 20 years And I never took them until I came into the religion. Last year I was doing pretty well before we faded so I went off of them and got on to a natural antidepressant about the time we started to fade. I have felt better than I have in 30 years. Going to the meeting ruined my mental and physical health. Once we faded I felt like a new person and no longer need these very strong drugs to help me. I hope the same things will happen to you.
It really is amazing what the control of this religion does to your mental and physical health. Keep at it and you will soon be ion a better path I life.

Missy,
I am glad to heard you went to the doctors. Most of the time the meds do work but they take about 2 weeks to build up. If you find they aren't working let you dr know and he can adjust them to a higher dosage or to different meds, they only know if they are working by your report. Other medicines you can take blood tests or your blood pressure and you will know they work but this you can't tell through testing.
if you choose a therapist and you are not happy make sure you try another one. Not all of them are good and some you may not click with and that is so important. There are good ones out there that will work hard to help you through this. The best combination to getting through depression is medicine and therapy together. You need to sort out why you got involved and all off the other issues that come with a cult. They can be a real life saver.
Stay with your job until you level out. You may regret it if once you get the drugs working you realize that was a mistake. Don't make any huge life changes for awhile.
Keep us posted. You also might want to try meditation because it clears your mind. You are just about 7 years younger than I am and I understand starting over in your fifties, it is difficult but also exciting. We are always there for you. I thought about one of your original questions about where you draw strength from and I get it from inside me. I research or do some thinking on that line then reason it through. When you come up with the decision it is very comforting. I don't find the need to pray to an invisible god.
keep us up to date and we are always here for you.

I am saving this post because my husband enjoys a cigar especially after he golfs. Maybe I will buy him a humidor for Christmas along with some very nice cigars. I don't know if he has a cutter or one of the nice lighters someone mentioned but they are great gift ideas. It is still a little uncomfortable for me knowing he does it once in awhile, still trying to get all of that stupid JW stuff out of my head. My husband actually started enjoying them right before we faded. He is almost 60 and decided he was going to enjoy whatever time he has left! I have smoked cigarettes but never tried a cigar. I don't care for the smell but I do like the smell of some pipe tabacco. Enjoy Guys!

Miss Fit, do NOT give up. I have been there before and your family needs you very much. Many of us have had those same feelings and I will tell you that going to a therapist helps a lot. I have a whole new outlook on life and I am living it and enjoying it. We faded a year ago and believe me when I tell you that it does get better. It is very difficult to go through but there are good times waiting for you.
It is very common when you leave a cult to feel all alone but you have to get out there and make new friends. Find what you love to do and then get involved in something, art, charity work, sports whatever makes you happy.
Also there are good books to read that will help you get your thoughts together. The Slight Edge is one and The Unthethered Soul is another. I don't find a need to talk to something I don't even know is there or cares about me. I talk to my husband when I need some encouragement or one of my family memeber and that is the beauty of having a therapist too.
Please get some help and if you are feeling that low. The religion made me so low I felt just like you and I finally was able with professional help to see what it was doing to me.
Your life will get better, you just have to take action.
We are always here for you and hang in there, just remember your family loves you and so do we!!
